Bloodshot stare like a hoodlum

Man Have I ever mentioned how sweet Queens of the Stone Age are?

So Fan Expo is this weekend, that's exciting. I don't really think anybody is going though, which is kind of lame. I'll have to see, I already have my pass, but I mean, it would be better if I had some company.

Dazzler's got a whole new bag of tricks for your ear holes. If you know what that means, then you've already heard.

I am hoping to buy a new guitar. I will most likely be selling Ba-basslebub, and hopefully that will give me enough money to put with my guitar fund to get one of the few I've had my eye on. I want an electric Les Paul-ish model (really just that roundness and cutout are important) with humbuckers passives if possible. I saw one with a floyd rose that would have been great but I'm not so much in the money. Also an active pickup would have been fun but I can always do that later.

Aside from that I'm gonna need some pedals. An Overdrive is easy enough to come by, but I'm thinking I'd like a phaser at some point. And a talk box maybe? Oh my.

I've been wanting to get to serious work on a comic this entire summer, but it's really hard to find time. It's not that I don't have free time, it's just that I don't have a lot of it, and when I'm done work all I want to really do is make dinner and hang out with people. Doesn't leave a whole lot of time for personal projects like that (unless they involve the people I want to hang out with). I have a couple of ideas, and I still want to get my stupid scanner working so I can get some blood curse going, but I dunno.

Man in The Box

Hey! Guess whose (almost) a third year design student?! It's Keith! That happened!

Haven't updated in a while, so here goes.

What have I been listening to you (probably aren't) asking? Well let me tell you:

Facelift by Alice in Chains has worked it's way into my "things I listen to entirely too much" list. It's so good though, man I wish I had known about these guys years ago.

Coheed and Cambria's new album Year of the Black Rainbow is great, just awesome. It has a lot more of a heavy kind of busy sound, lots of drum machine stuff and textured guitar. It sounds a lot like a more melodic version of their earlier stuff actually. A different sound than the Coheed and Cambria I've come to know and love, but still a great album.

Gorillaz new album Plastic Beach is just ... incredible. I overheard someone saying that it sounds like the contributors to the album have more of a hold over it than previously, calling it more of a "Gorillaz featuring:" album, but to me Gorillaz has always been that sort of music. I mean, it's pretty much Damon Albarn and whoever he can get isn't it? I'm not sure what some people were expecting. Also, Snoop Dogg's stuff on it reminds me of why I love that guy.

Lastly I've been giving In an Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel another listen. Really enjoying it. There's something about a band that can take 4 simple chords and write a really good song that's musically simple that I love a lot. Kind of like Marcy Playground, that way. I forgot how much I loved Two Headed Boy until last week. Dayum.

Music done, I must talk about Kick-Ass for a bit. I saw this movie with Rory, my girlfriend Alicia and Rory's girlfriend Linda, and I liked it a lot. It wasn't some incredible game-changing movie, but it knew what it was, and it never stopped being fun. I had read the comic a couple of weeks ago, and (unlike some of my friends, apparently) I am a bit of a fan of Mark Millar's stuff. I liked Wanted a lot (the comic more than the movie, although the movie was fun as shit) and Kick-Ass was a great comic. They changed quite a bit for the movie, but they kept the same overall tone, and to be honest the stuff they changed was really just because it wouldn't have worked as well in the movie **SPOILAR WARNING** For instance, in the comic you can pass off the not seeing Red Mist as being in league with his dad, but in the movie it would be a little difficult **OKAY SPOILURS OVER** The movie is the proud owner of my favourite single line in a movie in recent years. So that's something.

Speaking of comics, I got the first to volumes of Runaways this week, on sale for like 5 bucks in the TPB format. It's a great series by Brian K Vaughan (guy who did Y:The Last Man), and various artists. I'm liking it a lot, although it's a little more "teen-romancey" than I normally like. I need to finish reading it though, maybe if they're still on sale I'll buy the next one this week.

Started going to the gym this week, it's been a good time, although I need to start stretching after or my legs are going to RAPE me. I don't know how I'm going to do TaeKwonDo this week, especially if he makes us do that bending stance/sidekick conversion stuff. I feel like if I got into sparring today I might not be able to pull off a single back kick without falling over in pain, let alone a reversal (which he seems to be fond of). I realize though that I need to work on my non-linear stuff a lot more. My front snaps and turning kicks aren't bad now (aside from the control, which I need to work on still, core muscles whoooo), but side kicks are a bitch if I'm keeping proper form, and back kicks are damn near impossible. I seem to want to do them out of order, and I have a feeling that's going to get me punched in the neck if I don't start guarding my head better.

On the bright side my arm/hand work has been going great. I can pull off all of my knife hand/fist strikes pretty quickly and I'm working up to incorporating that oh-so-important sine wave movement into the whole thing. Practising on a heavy bag this week has really shown me how devastating a knife hand strike can be (even from close range and straight on) if I have the right wave movement, and if I throw my hips into it. 200 pounds of force being exerted through a centimetre of space is nothing to scoff at, apparently. I was actually kind of baffled at how far back the bag can go with one of those. Guards are a little tougher to practise alone, because I don't know if I'm fast enough for a real opponent or if I'm thinking properly when predicting movements. Once sparring starts again I'll be able to see if I'm getting a hang of it or not. Unfortunately the only other coloured belts in the class are black belts, so I might be up against them mostly, which is going to lead to a lot more time spent being kicked in the stomach than I would like to admit.

Once Upon a Time

I believed in fairy tales, really. I didn't just believe in their morals or their meanings, I believed in the events that took place in the stories actually taking place in real life. I didn't just believe in it, I knew, I knew that all of those stories took place, and that all of the people in those stories were real and that the adventures they went on, and the evil monsters they fought and their friends, their lovers, their families were all real.

As I grew up I kept reading these stories. Sure, it changed, it was little picture-books, and it changed into novels, then comics and graphic novels, but the principle was still there- stories. As I grew up it didn't matter to me whether or not the stories were real, I stopped caring if the characters ever really were alive, partially because I think if I thought about it too much I would have to deal with the fact that they were never real. There was nothing better than sitting in my mouldy room, on my bed, with my massive headphones on to block out sounds I didn't want, wrapped up in my star wars blanket with a comic book open on my lap, and I could just pretend that I was them, that I was there, that those were my friends and my enemies, and that I wasn't where I was, that I wasn't who I was. It was perfect, it was my escape. It's probably the reason I never got into drugs or anything, come to think of it.

Now I know these stories weren't real, and I know that I was just tricking myself into believing that they really happen to people. I know that people don't wake up one day with super powers, and they can't shoot laser beams from their eyes, and they can't sweep the girl they love off of her feet and fly away with her. I know that people can't read minds or turn locks into steam. I know there is no Mutant Academy, there's no Gotham City, there's no Metropolis, no Hogwarts, no Superman, no Spiderman, no Nightcrawler, no Kitty Pride.

I know all of this, but I still don't believe it. I don't think I ever will. These stories, these fairy tales are what have kept me going. Believing in superheroes, gods, luck, adventure and true, uncorruptable love are what has kept me sane. I will die happy if I know that I have succeeded in telling just one story to one person that makes them believe in something more than what they can see.

Jeremy Spoke in Class Today

Hey, so I have moved into 67, and spent a night there so far. Other than the fact that sleeping on my bed is like sleeping on the floor but worse, it's pretty okay. The shower is weird and the kitchen is small but those seem like nitpicky things to get mad about when I am only going to be there for a couple of months until I move into 69 in August.

Camping was pretty good. The ranger wanted to find a reason to kick us out the whole time (which she did on the last day because some raccoons got into our garbage) but overall it was pretty fun. There are large portions of the weekend that I don't really recall so that's good.

I went running last night with Rory and Andrew, and am sorry to say that I am way way out of shape. I had to stop like long before anyone else did, and I was pretty well dead after it was done, so that was kinda crappy, but all in all I guess it's a good thing, we just need to keep it up and stuff.

Conan is remaining hilarious.

I saw UP in 3D the other day when we got back from camping. Holy Shit, so damn good. I think it might be as good as Wall-E, maybe (at least in my books) better. Just everything about it was perfect, the colours, the characters, the landscapes, the music, the story, everything was beautiful. Pixar is easily my favourite movie studio right now.

Also, I don't remember if I've ranted about Mother Mother yet, but if I haven't, here it is. Mother Mother is a fantastic band, everyone owes it to themselves to look into their albums 'Touch Up' and 'O My Heart'. They're just front to back amazing.

Speaking of music, I think I am going to see Sonic Youth? I don't know too much about them but I've liked most of what I've heard, and the tickets were decently priced and I don't have anything else going on, so I guess I am down for that.

Gantz looks like it might be coming to a close sometime soon ... it's getting even weirder than I thought it could, which is saying something.

I've done a couple of sketches over the last few days on my tablet, not for any particular reason, just practicing different styles and stuff. Maybe I'll post a couple when I get home from work or something. I don't know.

If I'm not back again this time tomorrow

So I'm about 4 days away from moving into the village. I am so very, very un-prepared. I haven't had time to pack a single thing, and I've got an exam on Saturday so I can't really do anything but study until then. I'm at work right now designing calendars for the Club that I work for, and then I am going to a group study session for FACS. Ugh.

Anyway, I am going camping next weekend with Ben, Sam, Alex, his girlfriend Ruth, Rory, his girlfriend Linda, Katie M, Jay, Ivan and the others. It'll be sweet, drinking in the woods, huzzah!

On the me being depressed about breaking up front: I am still in the try to deal with it through absurdity stage, it's not working very well but, hey, eleven soaking wet turtles right?

On the music I am currently obsessed with front : Mother Mother, oh my god, I can't stress to you people enough how amazing they are. Just imagine a burger, with like, thirty smaller burgers as toppings.

Speaking of burgers! I won the slap bet! Hooray! I get to slap that fuck Andrew 3 more times (in my excitement, I used one up while he was eating a Baconator, it will be sweet, and just between you and me, there might be a slap coming up on camping weekend, we shall see.

I came up with a sweet idea for a comic the other day in my tired haze, I'll talk more about it later, but last night Ben made up an idea for a comic that is going to be an airborne clusterfuck of epic proportions, and I will be drawing up some concepts as soon as I get some free time to do so.

I am a mess.

I don't think so, Corporal Tyrannus

Quick update time! And then a schedule for myself so that I don't get off ... schedule.

So York is back to class after a 3 month strike, which means that I am COMPLETELY swamped with work for the next 2 weeks or so. I've got 2 typography assignments, 1 FACS assignment, and (possibly) something due for my Quantum Computing/ Star Trek watching/ Crazy weird class, all in that time, including an entire bound book, a poster for the ROM, and a group project involving mixed media/ inter-media. It's gonna be a long couple of weeks.

However, on the 14th I am heading to Clinton to see Emma on Valentines day weekend, and then coming BACK on the 17th. Then Emma is going to be in Toronto for the week of the 19th til the 1st of March. This is essentially my motivation to get all of my work done on time.

So, if you will excuse me, I am doing this for the next week:

Today : Finish class, Scan Rival Boys thing with Sam, Work on book cover.
Friday : Class, Finish Design for book cover
Saturday : Work on ROM poster
Sunday : Work on ROM poster (meeting with Type prof?)
Monday : print book cover, start to assemble process work
Tuesday : Class, finish process work, Assemble
Wednesday : Catch up day for any falling behind on cover, if not, ROM poster roughs due tomorrow

So yeah, fun.

Oh, I should also mention that I picked up the 5th Scott Pilgrim book yesterday, and so far, it's awesome.

Ja Ne.

Remember Remember the 5th of November.

So, as it turns out, there's like a 99% chance that as of the end of this week, my school will be closed as the result of a strike.

Let me try to make you understand how much this sucks. I pay about 8000.00 in tuition per year for my program, if there is a strike, we have to make the time up that we miss somehow, which means that the school year will be pushed into the summer, leaving me less time to work, and ultimately, less time to make money, meaning that depending on how long the strike lasts, there is a very real chance that I may not be able to return for a second year, at least not immediately.

However, if there is a strike, it will give me an opportunity to do a number of things that I have been putting off for some time now.

First and foremost is Killing Time issue 2. The issue is thumbnailed and ready to be drawn, I just haven't had the time to in recent months. However in the event of a strike, that could happen.

I also want to update my portfolio. The current portfolio is shoddily programmed and was put together fairly fast as an attempt to display my work for universities. Now that I am in school, I want to use it to chronicle that, and to display the work that I am doing in the event that any potential employers should some across it, they might have a more up to date idea of what work I am doing right now.

I should mention that because this blog is designed to match my current portfolio, any changes I make will probably result in blog being re-designed as well, probably.

And lastly, a project that I have been thinking about and planning for sometime now. I won't say too much about it in case I don't end up having any time for it, but it involves a hobo named Mac, and it's goddamned heartwarming

Anyway, I guess I should get back to homework, not that I think I will need to hand it in this week, but you never know.

Ja.

Cruel Cruel World

So I bought an iBook from my friend Claire the other day. Thus far, it's been pretty good, and I haven't had any problems with it, so that's good. I think the only problem I have with iBooks is the same problem that I have with all laptops, battery life. Battery life is pretty bad with most laptops though, even the newer macbooks, and I can usually get 4 hours or so out of this thing, so I don't really have any complaints!

I finished up the front cover and character profile back page this morning, so that should all be in order as well. If all goes as planned it will be uploaded and waiting for the printers by monday evening.

Anyway, I saw the hulk, twice. It wasn't without it's flaws, but it was still completely fucking awesome. I can truthfully say that it made me forget the old one existed, which is both a pretty astounding feat and a very very good thing.

I listened to Prozzak's new(ish) album finally, and all of the tracks (save one with some girl doing vocals) were awesome beyond my expectations. Unfortunately though, it is still only the second best album by them, Hot Show was just far too awesome. I mean come on, Europa? Milo's Night Out? fuggeddaboudit.

Anyway, I am going to go do a little bit of writing for various comics and projects. I might be going to see Kung Fu Panda or some shit tomorrow, I'll update you on how that goes.

P.S. Everybody watch the movie Monster House, holy shit.

Pretty soldier.

As promised, here's that comic I failed to upload the other day.

So this evening I spent a few hours with Sarrah and a couple of other people (Namely Ed and Emma) watching the first season of Sailor Moon.

God damn I love that show.

And not in some "sayiulur muun is suupa numba one!" kind of way. I don't think it's the pinnacle of art or anything dumb like that. But for some reason, I'm addicted to it, and because of that I will be humming along to "fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight" in my head for the next few weeks.

Well, now that I've got that out of the way, I'd like to take a second to ramble on about some other crap.

I've been really wanting to get a few graphic novels lately, and should I have a good place to get them and a decent viewer to use (hint hint Zack), I would probably download them. Not because I don't intend to buy them, if I could go somewhere that would sell these I'd gladly drop the 10 bucks or whatever they wanted for them, but given that I live in buttfuck nowehere for a couple more months, that's not happening.

Empowered Volume 1.

I know, I know. This looks like something that Marvel might whip up one night as masturbatory fodder for middle aged comic book nerds too embarrassed to buy Hentai. To be honest, that's what I wrote it off as at first as well, but I've heard nothing but good things about it from a few reputable sources, so I figure it's worth a try.

Besides, just from looking at it I know a couple of things. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it has an art style that's a little bit manga and a little bit western comic (which I like) and I really like the character design (har har har).

This is one of those comics that I'm sure carries a certain stigma with buying. I know through a few sources that the comic is pretty blatant with it's use of fan service, but I also know that it looks pretty easy to read, and I could go for that.

Plus I spot at least two half naked girls on that cover. I may have standards, but I'm still a guy.

Transmetropolitan Volume 1

Transmetropolitan is one of those comics that I talk about, despite having only read about a chapter here and there. I know enough about it to know that I really like it, but not enough to know everything that goes on in it. I haven't really had the chance to sit down and just read a whole volume beginning to end, and that's what I'm going for.

This one might be a little easier to find, netwise and storewise, as I've seen it on shelves before, and just neglected to buy it. I guess it was the fact that I haven't read enough of it to know if it would be worth the money. I have a strange habit that way. I'll buy movies or food or music that I've never seen, tasted or heard before, but for some reason when it comes to books, I need to know something about them first. And not just a little bit based on the synopsis on the back.

This is above all a habit I am going to need to break.

The Killing Joke

This one, however will be a little more difficult, in that it's out of goddamned print. Andrew saw a copy at Fan Expo last year and as far as I know is beating himself up over it now.

It's pretty hard to consider yourself a Batman fan if you haven't read it anyway.
